How To Attain And Maintain Good Health

Good health is the most important asset a person can have. Without it great wealth, fame and possessions are meaningless. Attaining and maintaining good health requires a lifetime commitment. However, it doesn't have to be a drab and dreary pursuit. It simply requires a series of lifestyle choices that will benefit your mind and body. Chief among these lifestyle choices is eating a healthy, balanced, diet, exercising regularly and getting adequate rest. Doing these things improves the quality of people's lives.

Eating a healthy, wholesome, balanced diet doesn't mean denying yourself all the foods you love. It simply means getting the nutrients your body needs to remain strong and healthy. Most health experts that means eating lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean meats and drinking water. Plus a growing number of experts say drinking a moderate amount red wine can also help. Even chocolate, the dark type, can be eaten as part of a healthy diet. Occasionally eating small amounts of pizza, pies, cakes, cookies and ice cream is also acceptable.

Regular exercise is vitally important to maintaining good health. This doesn't mean you have to join a gym or get a personal trainer. It does require 30 minutes to an hour of moderate exercise about 5 or 6 times a week. That exercise should include a cardiovascular workout and some weight training. For younger people that can mean playing sports while for older people regular walks, dancing, gardening and a little stretching and calisthenics can provide the level of activity they need to maintain good health.

Getting adequate rest is also important for attaining and maintaining good health. Making sure to get between 8 and 10 hours a day of rest allows your mind and body to heal and rejuvenate and improves memory, alertness and overall mood.
